In recent years our tuning/product development has been heading in the direction of reflashing the factory engine management control in vehicles such as Mitsubishi, Subaru and now Mazda. Reflashing, also known as Flash Tuning is carried out by reading the factory tune from the vehicle's engine management system (ECU). Using our in-house tuning software our tuners then make specific changes to the tune, based on analysing the vehicle's driveability, air fuel ratio and engine sensor operation on our dyno. These improvements are repeatedly uploaded back into the factory ECU and retested through dyno analysis until we achieve optimal results in the vehicle's overall driveability and performance.

This is the current service ChipTorque is offering for both the Mazda 3 MPS and the Mazda 6 MPS, known as the ChipTorque Custom Flash Tune. Typically a Custom Flash Tune takes 4 to 5 hours of custom dyno tuning time, but this can change depending on the vehicle's specific modifications. This service is only available at ChipTorque (Gold Coast) in conjunction with custom tuning the vehicle on one of our dynos. ChipTorque's Custom Flash Tune includes a before and after laminated dyno graph showing power and torque gains.

We are looking to provide nationwide support for flash tuning, in time. This will be achieved by successfully developing ChipTorque's Ezy-FLASH product line to be compatible with the Mazda vehicle range. But this is still in development stages for the Mazda. Now that ChipTorque are altering and flash tuning directly the factory ECU, development steps involve setting up communication between the factory ECU and the Ezy-FLASH hardware. Additionally we are implementing a licensed tuning software package so that other tuners can custom tune vehicles with the Ezy-FLASH product, for all vehicles supported with Ezy-FLASH.

ChipTorque's 1st development Mazda 3 MPS for Flash Tuning had previously been driving for a few years using the ChipTorque XEDE Processor. This opportunity has allowed us to get a great comparison between these 2 tuning methods and has really highlighted the advantages of Reflash over Intercepting the factory ECU.

With full control of the factory ECU ChipTorque’s dyno programmers are enthused to find that they have been able to hold the throttle open longer allowing for the Mazda 3 MPS to extend its power range higher in the rev range. Previously with the XEDE Processor peak power was achieved at 5,500rpm, then dropped above that point. Now with the flash tune, we have seen peak power at a similar rpm point and beyond but where it previously dropped in power, now holding this power through to the rev limit.

This power extention isn’t just experienced at peak power, the Mazda 3 MPS adopts this characteristic throughout transitional gear changes, reducing loss of power through gear changes. Additionally the flash tune technology has allowed our tuners to adjust cam timing for some exciting response improvements at part throttle.

In addition to driveability benefits, the flash tune has achieved performance gains equal as impressive when compared to the same vehicle tuned with XEDE Processor. Our development team are working to integrate the Ezy-FLASH for use on Mazda vehicles, but right now we are flashing directly into the factory ECU, paired with an in-house custom dyno tune.

ChipTorque still offer the XEDE Processor for the Mazda 3 MPS, achieving great performance gains for standard or modified Mazda 3 MPS vehicles. This system can be installed locally to you by your local auto electrician and with XMap tuning software, custom dyno tuning your vehicle now or in the future is simple for your local dyno tuner.

XEDE Processor
The XEDE Processor is an interceptor style Engine Management System. It generates changes in fueling and ignition timing by changing the factory ECU’s load and crank reference input signals to improve the factory tune, specifically to suit an aftermarket exhaust, engine modification or supercharger.

It has the additional functions of electronic boost control and optional dual maps to deliver individual tunes which can be changed at the flick of a switch while driving, e.g. High/Low boost or Power/Economy programs. Two stage intercooler water spray control or any on/off or PWM function including injector drive for an additional injector can be incorporated and controlled using the XEDE Processor.

Supplied with XEDE Processor unit, wiring harness, vehicle specific wiring diagram, base map and XMap tuning software.
